Event Info
Innovation and imagination are at the heart of these three ballets, highlighting the best in contemporary ballet. Gonzalez’s storytelling. Ochoa’s inanimate dance partner. Wheeldon’s high-energy technique. Each choreographer driving exciting growth of the ballet art form.
Rhapsody in Blue
Geoffrey Gonzalez’s Rhapsody in Blue became an instant audience favorite, first presented in March 2021 as part of our virtual season and then live on-stage in October 2021. His playful, energetic response to George Gershwin’s beloved score will make you feel the energy and special vibe you only feel when visiting New York City.
Choreography: Geoffrey Gonzalez (2021)
Music: "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin (1924)
Ecliptic
Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s ballet Ecliptic was first presented as part of City Ballet of San Diego’s Season 32, and the audience response was so overwhelming we are bringing it back to be seen and enjoyed once again. With large gold hoops, hypnotic music, and not-to-be-missed choreography, this is a ballet you will never forget. Awarded Best Dance in 2024 by the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Choreography: Annabelle Lopez Ochoa (2019)
Music: Ludovico Einaudi
The American
Christopher Wheeldon, a former dancer with the Royal Ballet and New York City Ballet, is a multiple Tony award winning choreographer. The American is an example of why he is one of the top choreographers in the world today. This dreamy, romantic neoclassical ballet for six couples is filled with invention and was greatly influenced by Dvorak’s dreamy score evoking wide open spaces. San Diego Premiere.
Choreography: Christopher Wheeldon (2002)
Music: "String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96" by Antonín Dvořák (1893)
